Is it true that some US Servicemen are paid so little that they are eligible for food stamps ?

Some?? - probably. That's why the service (other than officers & NCOs) is mostly filled with 18 - 24 singles that live in the barracks. So no housing expenses & they eat military chow. I went in @ 20 and single & though I didn't have tons of money, I did manage to pretty much do what I wanted - moneywise.

Only those who have a family!
The person in the military has housing, food and clothing (allowance). All required transportation is also provided.
The families of service members are a different issue! Many of them do qualify for assistance for food, but I don't think it is called "food stamps" any more.

When you enlist in the US Military you are provided with a base salary plus living quarters, a dining facility (3 meals a day), medical, dental, and legal services at no cost. No need for food stamps! The problem can be when an E1 or E2 is married and has kids. There are additional allotments but it can be a financial squeeze, especially depending on location. Thus the adage from the Marine Corps ... "if the Corps wanted you to have a wife & kids, they would have been issued to you."

All branches of the military start just shy of $20K. Add to that, that the military personnel have access to cafeterias on base they directly would not be eligible for food stamps.
However, not all members of the military are single. They may have a spouse &/or children.
But like any entry level job, it's not intended to support a family and the military would be no different.
So yes it's true that some military personnel are eligible for food stamps. But that's more about their personal choices than what the military pays.
