Why are there sometimes useless and ridiculous stories in local newspapers?

I don't know about in US states but I know in the UK county's that the public tell there stories, As they sometimes complaint or moan over ridiculous stuff like getting banned from a store or if there's a cat up the tree to put in the local papers for people to read why is that?

My local paper never covers stories about cats in trees, it's usually about people running marathons to raise funds for charities. What local school children are up to, people complaining about lack of Council Services, or their rubbish not being collected, pot holes going unfilled, job adverts, houses for sale etc...

    filler

  • Because such absurdities grab your attention and prime you to read adverts.

My "local" paper, which is basically advertising supplements surrounding high school sports news routinely runs a feature called the police blotter, which is a good way to catch up with those kids you knew in high school, when they get a DUI.

This police blotter never said a peep when we had an actual murder.

my local paper does carry such stories. It's called human interest, and does occasionally lead to action

The main goal of newspapers is global deforestation.
