Get rid of sewer smell? (carpet)?
So my sewer line backed up and the plumber can t come in for a few days. The worst part is that the main line is in my bedroom, surrounded by carpet. So now my bedroom smells like sewer. I m about to go out to buy a can of lysol, but is there anything else I can do to get rid of the smell? No vinegar recipes, please.
I am renting and therefore can not replace the carpet without moving out entirely. I also can not afford a damage deposit on another place nor can I afford the rent in another place.

The carpet and pad must be removed and thrown out. Then seal the floor and start over.

If the carpet was soaked in sewage then, as drip says, rip it up and the underlay or anything else underneath it. You'll never clean it. Then you can have a go at mopping the floor with your Lysol or similar. You might want to keep the carpet somewhere for inspection by your insurers, if you have them.

The only way to rid yourself from the smell is to rip up the carpet and the padding underneath. Cleaning it with a professional carpet cleaner isn’t going to get rid of the odor. The padding will hold the smell forever. If you have sewage water on your floor, this is dangerous.
Find plumber who can come in ASAP.
Our water heater broke and I had no problems finding a plumber who could come in the same day.

carpet cleaning machine. but wait until after the problem has been solved. you may have to do it twice, too.
suggest you ask if you can borrow this from any of friends, family, or neighbors -- renting it gets expensive.
btw, this may be covered by your homeowner's insurance
