It could be done, but why would you want to?

Personally I think it is a great way for drug traffickers from South America to get drugs over the wall Trump thinks will stop all drugs flowing into the US. If they built a large remote control helicopter where the drugs are flown over the wall into the USA and a person with another remote control on the US side to fly it on way ahead of Border guards to land it several miles inside the USA to be emptied of its drugs into a waiting vehicle. Especially if it could be done at night it makes you wonder as long as they changed the place the helicopter crossed the border every time likely quite a lot of drugs could be sent over in time.

Local R/C club built a large scale gas powered fixed wing endurance drone.

The general idea was to fly it via GPS in a large circle and have it deploy a parachute when the engine quit.

I guess it would have made a good drug delivery platform.

Sure, if you're less than a mile from the border - roughly the range of the transmitter that controls it.

The drones commercially available to the general public are battery powered and have limited range. They can only carry a camera and its mount. Furthermore, if you buy a drone you have to register it on-line with the manufacturer to activate the software so that you can fly the drone. This makes it very traceable.

To make the whole drug smuggling by drone worthwhile the drone will have to fairly large, which makes it easy to track and intercept.

Just toss them over the wall, I'll be waiting.

The distance a drone can cover is dependent on how much power it has on board.

    Also load will effect this.

I suspect this would be highly illegal.

Of course it is. There are many land borders where you can stand with one foot in one country and the other in another country. No drone needed.

Radio control model aeroplanes have been flown for hundreds of miles (with a full-sized chase helicopter or fixed wing aeroplane). They just carried cameras but could just as easily carried contraband across borders.

At present it’s not just easily possible but actively used by smugglers. But the problem has now got so dangerous that there is huge spending and research to develop anti-drone defences, especially as a drone was recently used very effectively for a terrorist attack.

BTW: drones with internal combustion power are far rarer than electric powered versions. They’re also vastly noisier so not ideal for smugglers.
