Japan is an island nation with rather limited resources. On top of that, the US industry was about ten times larger then Japans. Japan never had a chance in a war of attrition against the US, and they knew it. But they believed that if they could cripple the US Pacific fleet in a single massive surprise attack, the US would sue for peace. Hense the Pearl Harbor attack.

Once the US industry started shifting into full gear, it didn't matter how many people were willing to die for Japan. They were simply outmatched.

Japan also had serious flaws in other areas. A lot of resources were wasted because of the schism between the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, which caused an endless competition for what little resources were available between the army and navy. And also often caused disagreements and mistrust among the officers.

The Japanese doctrine of fighting to the death also had its drawbacks. Officers leading suicide charges against prepared enemy positions caused a loss of valuable combat and leadership experience. The Japanese never roteted their pilots, their pilots fought pretty much since they finished training, until they were shot down and killed. This again caused loss of combat experience and a lack of experienced pilots to train the next generation of pilots. As a result, the Imperial Japanese Navy air arm, which entered the war as one of the most elite air forces in the world, was reduced to a collection of barely trained recruits flying mostly outdated planes by 1944.

Once the US got into the war, I think Japan knew it was all over but the fighting. At least that's the impression I get from reading about it.
