Company cost cutting?

My company, is cost cutting, so I was a 9 to 5 worker. Now they have me come in for 3 hrs, then punch out for a few hrs, then punch back in for 3 or 4 hrs, can they legally do that? This is in Massachusetts But its a nationwide company..

    If you're not contracted to work _ hrs a week, they can.

    They have to cut costs, usually hours are the first thing they cut back on.

    I would consider looking for another job with full time permanent work.

    It sounds like it is not "your" company at all. You are just an employee, or you would be setting the hours, not being given them. Yes, they can give you shift work if that is what they decide they want to do. If you don't like it, you have the right to give notice. Sometimes, when you are a senior employee, you get preference and the newer people get the lousy hours, or the graveyard shift so, if you want to stick around for 10 or 20 years, you might then get the hours that you choose.

    Most people would not stay for split shifts like that. But you are free to say no and find other employment.

    There are some restaurants that will ask waitresses to do that but not demand it. They could say no and probably just get fewer hours. I knew a guy who ran a Ryans and he had a few who lived minutes away who were fine with it. And others who lived farther who were not.

    Contact the department of labor in your State and ask them what you asked us.

    of course they can, if you don't have to stay at work while you're punched out.
