It's always good to do good, but no one does good always, except for God. We sin, and our sins have spiritual consequences.

God is the Source of Righteousness, and we are born into a world which is separated from His Spirit - and suffers as a consequence. Jesus made the way to atone for our sins and reconcile us to God. God provides the way for all of our sins to be removed, and instills His Righteous Spirit within us.

And while it's always good to do good, the sins we have done are crimes, and in a court of law when being judged for a crime -- the judge doesn't throw out the crime due to all the good things you've done - but the crime has a penalty. But Jesus took our punishment upon Himself on the cross, the just for the unjust, to make us right with God and satisfy the debt which we could not pay.

Anyone who calls upon the name of Jesus, and asks Him for forgiveness of sins, He will forgive. Whoever calls upon Him in sincerity and in truth with a humble heart.

the intent to do good, often conflicts with the wisdom to do good.

even if a person gives another medicine, religion, or other behaviors, to relieve their suffering, the cure may be worse then the illness.

it is difficult to tell, what the right thing to do is, rather then to do no harm, intentionally.

henry david thoreau was of the opinion that "professional do-gooders" are worse, then those people who are "spontaneously" merciful or good to others. but the distinction is that giving a dime to a beggar, may not be merciful, or as merciful; then is the idea of having a food-bank, shelter, or sidewalk social-psychological counseling for the homeless beggars.

obviously there are different degrees of 'good".
