    The perimeter of a rectangular piece of land is 180 meters.

    The length of the rectangle is 36 meters.

    2(L + W) = 180, L + W = 90, W = 90 - 36 = 54

    The width of the rectangle is 54 meters.

    (Length is normally longer than the width!)

    Perimeter = P

    Length = L

    Width = W

    a) P = 2(L+W)

    b) 180 = 2(36 + W)

    90 = 36+W

    W = 90-36

    W = 54 meters

    Interesting. Normally the longer dimension is called the "length" and the shorter the "width".
