[American] Coattails has a limited place in modern English. Today it is used almost exclusively to describe political candidates who associate themselves with more popular (or at least better known) candidates. "In the 47th legislative district, Lawrence Hopeful scored a win on the coattails of Governor Harry Moonbeam." The vision is of the lesser known politician following very closely behind the better known one, practically standing on his coattails.
I don't think any dress coats have actually had tails in a long time.
