What’s low in sodium and cheap?

I’m in college. I just got diagnosed with high blood pressure and was told to limit my sodium. My issue is I don’t have a ton of money. I haven’t eaten an actual meal in about a week. I eat oranges, a salad etc. These things do not fill me up. What things can I eat that are low in salt, cheap and filling? I’m having anxiety about this due to my age and the fact that EVERYTHING HAS SALT.

As a fellow college student who formerly suffered hypertension, I will assure you that beans, chicken, peanut butter and veggies will go a long way. Also, have you tried Yoga or Meditating?

You can't go wrong with steamed vegetables.

you don't need a ton of money to stop using the salt shaker.

ANY food that is real and that you cook is always going to be less salt.

Stop eating chips, canned veggies, Asian food, ramen, pizza, If you must have french fries at a take out place, ask that they not be salted.

    Cook your own food.

Fried eggs and toast is a pretty low salt meal if you don't salt the eggs.

don't add salt to the water you cook potatoes, rice or potatoes.

Avoid canned gravy or packaged gravy.

AND just FYI caffeine is a bigger issue with high blood pressure than salt for some people. it was for me.

Also, taking ibuprofen as a pain reliever and using Sudafed for allergies also raises blood pressure.

Source(s): Dealing with high blood pressure for many years, am in good control when I stopped using ibuprofen, sudafed and caffeine, and lowered salt.

LIMIT your sodium does not mean you cannot have any.

Canned food, restaurant food, generally is high sodium.

My dinners generally cost under $4/person, generally low sodium.

AND my cooking tastes far better than commercial/restaurant food.

Just one example, no added sodium, Cornish Pasty. Chuck beef, carrot, potato, onion, peas, flour, butter.

Get some BP meds from your doctor and then you won't have to watch the salt intake so closely.

Garlic. On everything. Find low sodium spices and sauces and use them sparingly/according to serving size. I use a lot of garlic, fresh spices, sriracha, etc. When you're at the grocery store, read labels.

A Lot of packaged products are very high in sodium. Almost all frozen foods are even higher.

Another good option is to do a stir fry with chicken, vegetables, rice/noodles. There are a few brands (can't remember them off the top of my head) that have a teriyaki stir fry sauce that is pretty low in sodium and healthy overall. Just remember to pay attention to serving size. Sauces are very easy to add 5x the recommended serving which defeats the purpose.

It mostly means you need to cook your food at home, buy low or no salt food.

Replace your salt shaker with no-salt or mrs.dash.

    Look up salt free foods.
