Has anyone lived in both France and the US before?
Has anyone lived in both France and the US before? I have dual citizenship but have only lived in the US. I m 40 years old and want to try living in France for 6 months to a year but don t speak French all that well. I m wondering what kind of work i can do there. I don t mind working at a grocery store or some place that doesn t involve speaking. Just nothing too manual or physical. Plus I have allergies/asthma and wonder how the healthcare there compares to here? Today I went to the doctor and for a CT scan and allergy test it was $600. And this weekend for a 90 supply of a drug that was brand name it was over $900. I can t keep up. I m thinking if I get menial job in France at least, I ll have free healthcare. But at what cost? I just can t keep up here

If you do not speak good French, you are suspect. Customs and Immigration follow up to see if you have left on time.

First you will need to get your first French passport. That may be trickier than you think. Your French parent will have to help you to prove your entitlement. Why on earth did he or she not speak French with you as a child? The French are super protective of their language and hate anyone that does not speak it well. They can simply pretend not to understand you at all if you have a foreign accent, especially in Paris. So improving your French needs to be your top priority. Start today by reading and listening to French for at least one hour each day.
Then you will need to have enough money saved to move over there. Most unskilled jobs that require little French are filled by EU migrants from Eastern Europe so you may have a hard time getting something unless you have some unusual education/experience. If you do not want anything too physical, you might want to consider child care. That will be a good way to improve your language skills but of course you will need excellent references.
Healthcare is not free in France. I do not know where you got that idea. Doctors would not work if they were not paid. The French have an excellent healthcare system although it is a little quirky. Once you are settled in France and working, you will be able to get a a carte vitale. This will entitle you to access the taxpayer funded healthcare system the cost of which gets deducted from your pay (around 8%) in addition to all the normal taxes. The process will take you about 3 months starting when you have a French physical address to prove you are resident.

Without speaking French you would not get a job and if in the US not 'grocery assistant' speak to customers then it is different in France people speak to each other
