What is the purpose of high school math? Why do we graph functions?
I’m currently in grade 11 functions. Ever since I’ve been in high school I’ve always wondered the purpose of knowing how to graph lines and parabolas. I don’t see how it relates to anything in the real world, nor do I see the point of actually graphing functions in the first place.

The purpose of high school math is so that we can function in life and society, in general.
The purpose of college math is to get a job.
Otherwise, for example, when we get to the level of trigonometry and calculus, there is no purpose, other than it's nice to know.

These kinds of things are essential in computer programming. Graphs are a function of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and other branches of math. One kind of algebra, boolean algebra, is especially important in computer programming. All the math you get in high school is important.

For most people it is a complete waste of time. Teaching it to teenagers is child abuse. They would be better off in the sunshine.
However it is useful for a small fraction of people who use them later in professional life, such as engineers.
The point of graphing functions is to give us a picture of the equation. It’s like saying, what’s the point of painting pictures? Because we can learn some things better in pictures than in words or numbers.

Somebody needs to know how to do it or bridges and buildings would fall down, etc....if you don't want to be that person figure out how to get around it. Home schooling is definitely a pretty easy option these days.
Also, work to change it. What is taught is school is decided by the state government (not teachers or school districts). So talk to them and see what needs to be done to make a change.
