Vanguard engine will not turn over.?

A 23 horse engine I put in a 1980 Deere skid steer 3 years ago. It's been starting fine for the last 3 years. It started this morning. I tried to start it 30 minutes later and it won't crank over. No click, no nothing. Battery is good. There is good voltage at the starter. Could it be the 39 year old ignition switch, something in the wiring, or something with the starter on the engine?

If you are getting 12V to the starter, it sounds like the starter is bad. Not sure if it uses a solenoid r how the power to the starter is switched. Your switch or wiring could be bad. Could be a loose connection somewhere along the way.

Jump the starter to see if the motor turns over/cranks.

BLAME THE BATTERY FIRST. 12Volts is not enough. It needs to be 13+Volts to turn over a 12Volt starter motor.

Fawk your voltage. How many amps has it got? A battery can have 12volts but only 20Amps. A starter motor DEMANDS 300AMPS. You battery is dead. Run a jumper cable to another vehicle and jump start it. If it jump starts, then there may be a problem with A.) the battery b)the cable connections to the battery are not clean and tight c) the generator or regulator.

. Am figuring you made sure the battery cables connections are clean and tight.

. So either the battery is hooped or the generator is screwed.

No click means no battery juice. So all you can do is put the battery on a battery charger (10A12V)(--nothing smaller will do)and let it charge for at least 4 hours(otherwise let it charge overnight.) then try again. If it starts right up then it was not the key or anything else but if the battery dies soon again then the battery is near death.

Ignition, starter, generator, regulator, cable connections, wiring are all fine. The battery is the part that gets old.

It has to be electrical. I can't look at it from here though. Could be the solenoid.
