Why does the stock market volume die down after 4 pm?

Why does volume die down significantly after 4 p.m.? Is there any real reason for this? Or is it just all in people's heads that they should stop trading immediately after 4? It doesn't make much sense to me.

The main stock market closes at 4 p.m. All that happens after that is "after-hours" trading, mainly online.

"As of 2019, the NYSE has normal trading hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, unless there's an early close due to a holiday."
