Why is my wood rough after being sanded?

I cut some fir wood log rounds up using a mitre saw. After getting a nice cut I proceeded to sanding using a detail mouse sander. I started with 80 grit to 240 grit. The left side of the log in the photo looks perfect. The other side has flaws. What am I doing wrong? It looks like tiny holes in the wood.

I will add that it is endgrain, which is 10x tougher to sand than with the grain. You have some work ahead of you.
