why are public schools locally controlled?

shouldn't every public school in america be controlled by a massive centralized federal bureaucracy in washington d.c.

get rid of locally elected school boards and put all schools under a single administration with all decision making coming from the top to bottom. with a national set of rules and curriculum and national standardized testing.

    Germany tried that in the 1930s-40s and look how that worked out.

    Surely, you're joking. If we'd wanted to be controlled by a remote bureaucracy we'd never have declared our independence.
