Culture and religion can positively impact collective citizenship. The idea that we have a shared history can be a powerful force in binding groups together in a collective.
In a broad sense you see this in the wars of independence in Latin America where people like Jose San Martin and Simon Bolivar appealed to a common culture, religion and politics when fighting for independence against Spain. More specifically in a country like Mexico, there were differences between creoles, metizos, blacks and indigenous people(because of Latin America's complicated cultural and racial history). Yet Fr Hidalgo(Mexico's independence leader) was able to overcome those differences by routing the movement for independence in a shared cultural identity.
