Why did my desktop computer's audio stop working?

It's an HP Pavilion Core i5 running Windows 7 and "Beats" audio, whatever THAT is. Running the diagnostics software says the external speaker system is turned off, which it clearly is NOT. To test them I moved the audio plug from the rear output to the front plug in. That works but sound quality is worse and no longer adjusts the bass and treble output. Is this likely a problem with software or the sound card?

First, check software by installing new software. go to the hP site, download the proper software. Uninstall the current hP Audio, and then run the install.

If the problem persists after this, then the issue is hardware, most likely the audio jacks at the back of the machine.

    Download/install audio driver(s) from HP.
