Regarding a hamster bin cage.?

is it ok for me to just poke holes like this? Or do I have to get wire mesh?

You can drill holes but you need to drill many more than what is in that pic. You can also drill them on the side fore more air flow. Just make sure you sand down any of the holes the hamster can reach so it doesn't get cut on sharp plastic.

I would be afraid that those holes in the plastic would not provide adequate oxygen and ventilation and that the poor thing would suffocate to death.

It's great as an emergency cage for things Ike transportation to the vet or traveling with the pet for a few hours, cleaning the pets cage etc but long term not enough circulation, the holes can be sharp in the insides, hamsters sometimes jump up and could get hurt, drilling holes would have been better

Be aware that if the hamster works ong enough it can dig through the pastic (and chew) then escape. You would be better off using a smal gauge wire that they cannot carpet or squeeze through.

Making a suction cage is simple, make a wood frame, use wire for bottom sides, lid and a door with a hinge and lock. Remember to use either cardboard or plywood or pastic for the flooring so their feet won't fall through, if you make it removable it's easier to clean rather than having to soak the whole cage. Just a thought.

That might be OK short term ...like a couple of hours to transport an animal somewhere. I don't think it allows for enough circulation, otherwise ...and it could get too hot, also. Get the wire mesh.
