Questions about shipping?

I have a package getting delivered to me due for this Thursday. It's UPS shipping and was coming from California to Illinois. Like I said it is scheduled this for This Thursday but last night it got to a holding facility 50 minutes away. Besides being tortured that a package I am very much looking forward to being less than an hour away and I can do nothing about, why would a shipping company hold a package so close but not send it out? It's happened before and instead of getting frustrated I decided that I would look for answers.

Most packages come to a sorting facility. They then are sorted and moved to be loaded onto trucks for delivery (or to go to other sorting centers.) There is a good chance that the truck your package needs to be placed on is out making other deliveries at the time it is sorted in the facility. it must wait til the truck is returned and then is loaded up during the night/early morning and then taken out for delivery.

It can be like missing a connecting flight. If the truck(s) have been packed and are out for the day, they're not going to come back when your package finally arrives at the facility ...it will go out the next day, instead.
