Now, your text should be written like this:
I did not choose, at first, to enrol on a university course. I decided to begin a career, because a working life would give me the opportunity to experiment with different ways of working and living, and I could then discover what suits me best. My own aim was to understand my interests and skills, in order to gain some pleasure from what I shall be doing. I decided, after considering all my options, to apply to X University.

Yes, it is expressed well, but there are many alternatives, too. Here's one: At first, I decided to start a career rather than go to a university. My reasoning was that pursuing a career would allow me to experience different things. In turn, I'd learn more about what interested me and be able to identify the skills needed, as well as begin to acquire them. Despite this original decision, I changed my mind and, ultimately, decided to apply to X University.
