People add me to FB - is it a scam?

I recently joined a FB group for runners and it's a great resource for info about injuries, races, and advice on exercise, so I've benefited from joining and sharing training techniques.

A few women on there have gone back and forth with me on my posts and then they add me as friends to share fitness journies, which I don't mind.

I'm finding that after I added a couple of them and they became "supportive" of my half marathon training, they asked me to join a trial nutritional/training program they manage. They ARE professional coaches and have meal plans etc., but I'm not in need of any assistance and have my own training schedule.

I've now stopped adding people from the group since it seems like they just want to get women to pay for programs to lose weight or guide them through training.

Are groups like these scams?? I never asked anyone for help on the group, only advice on a couple of injuries I had in the past.

If this gets mentioned quickly or early on, bail. There's way too much of this on FB.

Obviously, it might depend on HOW it gets mentioned, but if it comes across as a "form letter" (using standard type language) and they're hyping something, don't bother. Even on the offchance it isn't MLM, it's still inappropriate.

If you've been FB friends for awhile, and someone sends you a personalized msg about an issue you have and just a suggestion, that might be different.

Bottom line: Don't be afraid to dump people if they send the wrong vibe. Also I know someone who has on her profile "No MLM, please". There's nothing wrong with this.

I don't know if those are "scams" or not but I have dialed down my own FB activity significantly. To nearly none. I represent my company at 4 Chambers and have become overwhelmed by the endless "marketing opportunity" that FB presents to people who are scooping up all the names they possibly can in order to direct market and the classes teaching people how to do so effectively that are being offered in nearly every community. It's been ruined for me. When I open up FB, I find dozens of disguised ads and at least 7 videos every day from people I "know" who are using FB as their personal marketing tool to success. I don't use it. When I need to reach someone, I call or private message them.

I don't think they are scams however, they are probably self-employed by a multi-level marketing business (which some people WOULD say are scams). I don't think these women are looking for true friends, just people to buy from their company.. so I wouldn't add them anymore.

There is a fine line between someone trying to sell you something you don't need and an outright scam and hard to say exactly where this falls but don't go signing into any of these things.

Anyhow, I suggest you simply keep texting and emailing as it helps you and turn down all trial offers. You could even block the ones who are just selling stuff you don't want.

There are scams everywhere these days, you cant trust the strangers on the internet. It's good you have your act together and was able to spot suspicious activities. I'm sure there are others like you in the group so if you can get a few good ones together maybe you can make the group aware of such activities and get them banned. If you're knowledgeable enough you can start your own group and moderate it yourself. Good luck on your training and I wish you success on your marathon.

I don't know if they're necessarily scams, but if you decide to join their trial nutritional/training program, don't be surprised if they start hounding you for money. You were wise to quit adding them.
