Is the term 'guy' a good word of affection?

"Guy" is an informal term to describe a male in general. I don't particularly think of it as either a term of endearment or offensive. It's just a very casual, innocuous term. Although there are certainly scenarios in which it would not be appropriate to use the word "guy." It would not be appropriate when addressing males in a formal or professional setting. Example: You are employed in some capacity of service, let's just say waiting tables. When you approach the table, you wouldn't want to say "What can I get you guys?" You would address them as either "ladies or gentleman," or "ma'am or sir." But in my opinion, if it is a casual, informal setting with friends and peers, it is not at all offensive or inappropriate.

It's not very commonly used to show affection in my experience. Guy is what you'd call a friend who is not very close to you. Personally, I enjoy using it, but everyone I refer to as 'guy' thinks I'm being rude or distant.
