    Two numbers multiply to be -40

    (i) x y = -40

    and add to be 3

    x + y = 3

    or

    (ii) y = 3 - x

    Substitute (ii) into (i)

    x(3 - x) = -40

    3x - x^2 + 40 = 0

    x^2 - 3x - 40 = 0

    Factorise

    (x + 5)(x - 8) = 0

    x = -5

    or

    x = 8

    x and y are interchangeable

    The numbers are 8 and -5

    x(3-x) = -40

    x^2-3x-40 = 0

    (x-8)(x+5) = 0

    Numbers are -5 and 8

    x y = - 40

    x + y = 3

    x ( 3 - x ) = - 40

    3x - x² = - 40

    x² - 3x - 40 = 0

    (x - 8) (x + 5) = 0

    x = 8 , x = - 5

    y = - 5 , y = 8

    Numbers are - 5 and 8
