Boss threatened to fire me out of the blue?
I m a paralegal for a partially retired attorney in New Mexico. I ve never had any big issues with my boss and have always bragged about my job security since I work hard to the point of coming on on days I ve tried to call off sick, holidays and weekends at his request. Fourth of July just rolled around and I party a little too hardy and wasn t feeling well by the next day so I called off. My boss called me but I had poor reception so I didnt get the call until later. In his first message he claimed my excuse wasn t valid and in his second call he said he would have to replace me if I didnt come to work.
I get one day off a month that stacks every month but he doesnt like it when i use them consecutively so I tend to use them as they come. I did come in to work but, he wasn t there. I did my work and went home but I ve been worried, should I get a new job?

Having a job where the boss threatens to fire you any time you call in sick is not job security. I would look for a better situation. That does not mean you have to quit this job first.

Yes, you can find much better employment. With your skills and background see if you can go to work for the courts, like for the judge.

You reason for the time off was really VERY weak but if you rarely ask for time off it would seem reasonable to live with it. If there was critical things going on that day where you were needed then it could be understandable but sounds, in general, like he was being a jerk. As was mentioned, if the pay is very good you might choose to tolerate it but, if not, look for a new job.

Yes. You are taking advantage of you boss and his leniency. He makes the rules. Good luck with your new jobs...I suspect you will have many.

I forgot to mention, I'm thinking about joining the airforce in a year, so I would be quitting in a year anyway
