Do you chant for people in Nichiren Buddhism, like you pray for other people in Christianity? Or does chanting only help yourself?

You seem not to understand the process.

Generally, Buddhism subscribes to the idea of 'living one's life as a prayer for others', as a way of life, and accepts that their is no separation between self and others, and sects of Christianity do; therefore, it is not important whether a Buddhist chants or prays for others, or not. Like the followers or nearly all religions, Buddhist believe 'being Buddhist' is the most helpful thing one can do for oneself and others. As custom with many Eastern beliefs, Buddhism fundamentally accepts the 'spiritual truth' all religions share in common.

Buddhism is generally broken into two branches; "Mahayana", the 'higher vehicle' devoted to 'Collective Spiritual Enlightenment', and "Hinayana", the 'lower vehicle' devoted to 'Individual Spiritual Awareness'. Because both are considered to lead to the same objective, it makes no difference which one a devotee chooses. 'Nichiren Buddhism' comes from the Mahayana view, which would accepts expression for the sake of others.

I am not very familiar with Nichiren Buddhism, or whether part of it's doctrine includes chanting or praying for others, but I don't suppose it is against it, in any way. Being of Japanese origins, it is safe to assume that it would be accepting of Christian tenants; as Japanese society has a history of welcoming the Christian faith, along with Buddhism and Traditional Shintoism, despite being isolated for so long, out of fear of foreign influence (as portrayed in James Clavell's novel, turned mini-series, Shogun).

In the East, Jesus Christ is accepted as having attained the same level as The Buddha, and don't make any distinction between their teachings, which is not so much the case in the West.

Lets let the Bible answer for Christianity Matthew 6:5-8 below.

Matthew 6:5-8 New King James Version (NKJV)

    The Model Prayer

5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the [a]hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you [b]openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

Thanks for the question friend God bless.

Chanting and other forms of Satans witchcraft don't actually do anything.

Chanting does not do anything but soothe one's own mind.

Buddha was fat and lazy, and actually left his wife and child to go sit and get fatter while pretending to be profound. And he's dead. And chanting just makes you look stupid..

In Buddhism it's called loving kindness.
