Thermodynamics?

A 2400 hp diesel locomotive burns 160 gals of fuel per hour. If the heat of combustion of the diesel oil used is 1.2*10^5 Btu/gal, find the efficiency of the motor.

    2400 HP = 1790 kW

    160 gal/hr x 120000 BTU/gal•hr = 19200000 BTU/hr = 2.026e10 J/hr = 5630000 J/s = 5630000 W = 5630 kW

    efficiency = output/input = 1790 kW / 5630 kW = 0.318 or 32%
