You should study information on EMP's - Electro Magnetic Pulses. Nuclear bombs set off high in the atmosphere would not hit humans with radiation but would bring an end to everything connected with electricity. That includes lights, gas, heat, water, sewage, police services, fire services, hospitals, food supplies, gas engines, batteries. One government estimate is that it is possible that 90% of the country could die within a year.
