Is 'War and Peace' a good book for an intermediate reader?

I hear that it is a good book, however I do not know if it is proper to my reading level.

This question cannot be answered with a yes or no. The best approach is to read a few pages and see for yourself.

The novel is very long and keeping track of all the Russian names is a bit of a chore. It's also not exciting - there are hardly any action scenes; most of what I recall is officers getting drunk. I do recommend watching one of the many movie versions.

For an intermediate reader interested in Russian literature, I would recommend "The Nose," a hilarious short story by Gogol, and "Crime and Punishment," by Dostoevsky.

Start with "Anna Karenina", which is shorter (and a damn good book), and will give you a feel of what's the author like.

Probably not, but why not just TRY IT?

I'm constantly amazed by people who are interested in a book but feel they have to ask the opinions of random strangers on the Internet. Just read it. When it gets boring or too difficult, put it down and read something else - it's not illegal, you know.

Have you ever tacked a thousand page book before?? It takes strength, perseverance & endurance. Lots of people can't handle this. I've never read it. But it's supposed to be a classic.

I have read a 1000+ page book on the US Civil War. Took me 5 months to get thru it. And this was because I had an intense interest in our Civil War. Thousand page books are not for the 'faint of heart'.

    No, not at all.

Everyone is different. You can try reading it and if you don’t like it right now, don’t read it. I’m not sure if you’ll have to read it in high school but after awhile, try to read it again.

No, not at all. Read Catch-22 instead.
