You have to mix in super fast, short sprints into your running training. For example, you warm up, stretch, run a few miles, walk, stretch and then run 100 meters as if a lion wanted to catch you for dinner. Walk a few minutes to catch your breath, sprint again. Do this four or five times. If you still want, run a few more miles. Throw in another sprint afterwards. You see where I'm gong with this ? If you want to be a fast runner, you have to run fast !!

    1. Improve your running form. This includes (get ready to google some terms) increasing your cadence, stride length, posture and breathing.

    2. Become fitter by running more and pushing through the burning.

    3. Set yourself little goals while you run (e.g. catch the guy in the red shirt)

    Practice and train.

Without knowing what your current running program is, it's hard to suggest something specific BUT one way to work on speed is to practice running faster, in spurts (intervals). Go running at a comfortable pace (nice and easy) and then for a specified time (a number of seconds or minutes) or until you reach a certain distance or landmark, pick up the pace. I used to sprint to the next mailbox down the street, then slow back down to catch my breath, and then pick another mailbox or landmark and sprint to that (and do it over and over for my workout, however long that was).

You might want to talk to a running coach to get some good advice, because we don't know how far or long you're used to running, and it's easy to injure yourself if you try to improve your speed or distance too quickly.
