After approx. how many gal's. of water should I run my water softener?

I am 75, widowed and live alone. My softener does not work automatically. So, I must do it manually. We have very hard water in this area.

The question is based on the hardness of the water and the capacity of the softener. From there you do a calculation. If your hardness is x grains / gallon and your softener capacity is z grains, then you do the calculation [z grains]/[x grains/gallon] = [z/x] gallons of water. Once you reach [z/x] gallons, you recharge.

Never heard of anyone doing such as you are...…...Maybe time to purchase a brand new system to prevent all this excess you have to do. If AQUA systems in your area......believe me, they are one of the best around. Uses less salt in the container. good luck

I always had them deliver my salt bags they are heavy to us Seniors some extra pay but well worth it.

Time to invest in a used automatic one. It is better than what you got.

Well, it all depends on the various sizes, etc. so it is easy to give you bad information. But figure that you run 200 gallons of water per day through the softener and the capacity is about 1400 gallons for water hardness, say 25. So you would cycle the softener once per week and consume about 1 40 lb bag per month. Try that and see if it keeps you in soft water. If so, increase the cleaning cycle to 8 days, then 9 days. Eventually, you will start finding water spots on the glasses, which means you have gone too far. So you do the cycle on shorter intervals.

The number of gallons depends on the 'hardness' of the incoming water.

If your unit is old enough not to have an automatic setting, you will SAVE money by upgrading to one that does.

Mine regenerates every 700 gallons. You may find you need more or less depending on your needs.
