Who are your favorite authors that don't get enough credit?

I'm looking for some lesser-known authors/books to read that are just as good as the bestsellers. Preferably fiction/historical fiction/suspense.

There are so many genre writers who have disappeared off the shelf and aren't even mentioned on wikipedia, because they came and went before it existed. I once bought a two foot stack of books from my local library, discarded for lack of interest and admittedly, many of them showed only a handful of readers since I'd read them twenty years before.

I'll skip them, as you won't find them even in the second hand bins anymore.

H.Beam Piper, a scifi author credited by some with inventing "alternative history" is still one of my favorites.

Then there is Roger Zelazny, who outside of his Amber series has disappeared into obscurity.

Edna Ferber; Richmal Crompton (her novels, not the 'William' books); Marcia Davenport; Ann Bridge.

  • If you ever feel like reading fantasy, a great author is James A. Owen. His writing is reminiscent of greats like JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, HG Wells, and James Barrie.

Gregg Taylor who writes the Red Panda Adventures and Black Jack Justice audio dramas and books

https://decoderringtheatre.com/books/ https://decoderringtheatre.com/shows/ If you do start the audio dramas, start on season 1 since the stories progress.

Terry Pratchett is well know for his fantasy but he wrote some historical fiction too. I really liked his book "Dodger"

I admit most of my favorite living author were on podiobooks but I generally don't listen to nor read much historical fiction especially none steampunk none superhero historical.
