What was the Dial Up experience like?

It sucked. Downloading porn took forever.

Having any kind of internet was a big step forward compared to what there was before.  It could be kind of slow, but that was part of the package at the time.  It's easy to say everybody was miffed and waiting for broadband to arrive, but did everyone really envisage broadband back in the dial up days?  Doubtful. 

It's a bit like saying the first people to cook with an oven were impatient for microwaves to arrive.

Mighty slow.......

We had dial up and auto-dial-up connections for Teletype all thru the 80s. A word was measured as a 5 character set and 50 words per minute was typical, 100 words per minute was exceptional. Some of the data was actually musical and all was audibly identifiable for speed and protocol. Fax is still a viable dial-up protocol.

It was and --- and for some it still is ---

like waiting for 1960s oil-based house paint to dry.

If you never got to see how long paint stayed wet back then,

you really can't know what this means.

It was slow but the internet was less evolved so it wasn't that bad at first, I'm talking like 1995 to 1998 but then when the internet became more sophisticated then the slowness got ridiculous slow.

A bloody nightmare...

Wait 30 minutes for the page to load. Then screaming at your sister for using the phone and loosing your progress 29 minutes in.

The internet in those days was an adventure, the wild west. Ah yes 40 minutes  to download a 3.5 minute song, happy days!

I can still remember experiencing the  quiet joy of getting a connection after 30-40 seconds of  beeps and strange squeaks 

Slow and normally accompanied by by the repeated plea of "Have you finished in the internet? I need to use the phone"

but still exciting (for computer afficianados) because it was a new and inexpensive way of connecting your computer to other computers

I remember the old 150 / 300 baud acoustic modems...(i.e. before any internet)
