When traveling to Rome, will I get my passport checked at FCO or before getting on a departing flight from the US?

When going to FCO in Rome, will I go through Customs and Border Security before or after leaving the United States?

Passports are checked before and after every international flight. Customs checks are carried out at the port of destination.

Your passport will be checked in the United States before you board the flight.

When you arrive at Rome you will pass though immigration with a second passport check and customs.

The airline will check you passport when you check in. TSA will check your passport when you go through security. You will may need to show your passport as you get on the plane. Some airports have facial recognition kiosks, but you should have your passport available then away.

When I arrived at FCO, it was the simplest procedure ever. No questions. I don't think the border agent even looked at my picture. He just stamped us right through.

You will have to present your passport to the airline prior to boarding. Your passport will the be checked when you arrive at the airport. at FCO, it is very simple and fast.

You just have to make sure you take the correct path.

There is a single path all passengers arriving will take, then it splits into 3 paths depending on what country you are from. If I remember, for US citizens, it is the path to the left. There will be several turnstyle like rows. You scan your passport and it will let you proceed. Then your photo is taken after which, the doors will open to let you proceed to an individual who will stamp your passport.

There is no forms to fill out either. All in all a very easy process

Two different things- immigration and customs. When you check in for your flight, you will need to show your passport. When you get off the plane, follow the other passengers and stand in line at immigration. Show your passport, They may ask a few questions, like how long you're staying and where you're staying. Then you walk through and get your bags from the carousel, walk through the door that say "Nothing to Declare" , and you're out.

They will make sure that you have a passport when you are leaving the US, but that's just to make sure you have the document you need to enter Italy (otherwise, they have to bring you back on their dime). It will be officially checked when you go through the immigration checkpoint at FCO. It will be formally checked again when you return to the US and pass through US Immigration.

The airline will make sure that you have a passport, since they do not want to have to bring you back when you get rejected in Rome.

The immigration check, at which time the Italian authorities check your passport, takes place after you land in Rome, then you go through customs. The US customs doesn't really care that you are leaving, unless you happen to be taking more than USD 10,000 with you - THEN they would care.
