An airplane flies 82 km [W 30.00
S], then 45 km [S] and finally 175 km [E] to get to its destination. The journey takes 3.2 h.

X = -82cos 30+175 = 104 km
Y = -82sin 30-45 = -41-45 = -86 km
displacement D = √104^2+86*2 = 135.0 km
average velocity = D/t = 135.0 / 3.2 = 42.2 km/h
heading angle = arctan Y/X = arctan -86/104 = -39.6° (E 39.6° S)

Add the easterly components to get the net easterly motion
Then add the northerly components to get the net Northerly motion.
Calculate the magnitude of the displacement by using Pythagoras' theorem.
Calculate the angle North of East from tan( theta ) = opposite / adjacent = North/ East
so theta = atan( north / east) where theta is the angle north of east
Finally velocity = displacement / time

Total displacement in East direction = -82cos30 + 0 + 175 = 104 km
Total displacement in South direction = 82sin30 + 45 + 0 = 86 km
Total displacement = √(104²+86²) = 135 km
Angle of displacement = tan⁻¹(86/104) = [E 39.59 S]
Average velocity = Total distance / Total time = (82+45+175)/3.2 = 302/3.2 = 94 km/hr
