Suppose you purchase 3 shirts and a hat.
The hat costs 19.75 and you spend 56.50 in all.
Each shirt costs 12.25.

56.50 - 19.75 = 36.75 (the amount you paid less the price of the hat)
The three shirts cost 36.75.
Assuming they all cost the same, each one will be:
1/3 x 36.75 = 12.25

x = shirts, y = hat
3x + y = 56.50 .... this is your equation
3x + 19.75 = 56.50
subtract 19.75 from both sides
3x = 36.75
divide both sides by 3
x = 12.25
each shirt costs $12.25

(56.50-19.75)/3=12.25. This assumes all the other shirts were the same brand and style.

Total cost of the three shirts is:
56.50-19.75
AVERAGE price of the three shirts is:
(56.50-19.75)/3
There is no way to know what EACH shirt costs.
