How does sacrificing freedom for security make you lose both?

If the history of civilization has taught us one thing, certainly this is it. As a matter of fact sacrificing any thing for something losing both is one thing most of us experience in everyday life, but how and why is this the way it works?

    Because excessive security means less freedom and frequently doesn't make you any more secure.

    if anyone is dumb enough to give up their freedom for temporary safety they deserve neither liberty nor safety.

    It is not a zero sum proposition. You don't have to lose either.
