You can actually do this in your head. Speed = distance/time.
How far did he go?40+180 = 220miles.
How long did it take him? 40miles at 20mph takes 2hr and 180miles at 60mph = 3hrs
2hr + 3hr = 5hr.
220mi/5hr = 44mph
Don't make it harder than it is.

40 miles at 20mph took 2hr
180miles at 60mph took 3hrs
220 miles took 5 hours, so average was 44 mph
