Is it necessary to clutter your mantel with a bunch of greenery for the holidays?

I love decorating for Christmas, but I've never been a huge fan of loading up the fireplace mantel with a bunch of greenery. It looks cluttery and collects dust.

I am thinking of a bunch cleaner look without all of that. Maybe a few nutcrackers and a nice Christmas painting mounted behind it. Is this OK?

I don't have a mantle.  If I did it would have Xmas Beer on it as they get festive.

    Your dungeon, your decision.

I used to put greens on my mantel but grew tired of cleaning up after the pine needles. So, now I decorate with a variety of Christmas themes. Last year I displayed my milk glass collection that I placed red candles and tree orniments in. Very festive.

This year I will decorate with nutcrackers and my collection of silver orniments and small empty boxes wrapped in red foiled paper.

    I totally agree.

Too much Christmas clutter doesnt make the holidays beautiful

A little line of nutcrackers would look amazing in different heights

There is no law saying that anyone has to decorate for any holiday.

Do what you want.I like the idea of a home with just a few really nice pieces.

All too much of the Christmas traditions are founded on pagan rituals and superstition.  You are not required to decorate your place at all in order to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.  Besides the fact that Jesus was born sometime in the fall, probably around the Day of Atonement, not the middle of winter,  evergreen boughs on your mantle are inviting disaster.  They are very flammable.

You can nail baby dolls by the toes above your fireplace for all anyone cares. It's your home, you decorate how you see fit, end of story.

It is only up for a month. It can’t collect that much dust.

I fill the mantle with Nutcrackers and a strand of LED lights.

You can do whatever you think looks good to you

  • Evergreen branches are brought into your house to freshen the air when you have feasted on the game you hunted, drunk plenty of wine and spend the darkest days of the year sleeping it off around the fire in the centre of your round house.  Putting them around the fireplace hints at their original use.  None of it is necessary.  Do what suits you.
