    f(x) = (x-7) (x-8) (x+9)

    x = 7, 8, -9 are roots of the given equation

    f (7) = (7-7) (7-8) (7+9)

    f(7) = 0

    f(x) = (x - 7) (x - 8) (x + 9)

    f(7) = 0

    f(x) means what do you get when you plug in x for the function. All the x's stay the same. f(7) means to change all the x to 7. since you have 3 quantities multiplied together, we see that when you plug in 7 you will get (7-7) or 0 and 0 times anythign is 0 so f(7) is 0.
