Are feral hogs edible?
I just read the horrible story of a woman killed in Texas by feral hogs. Lots and lots of comments about how vicious they are. This is an animal I know knowledge of. Is there a reason nobody is recreationally shooting these things? They don't taste good? Or too hard to track or find? Or too dangerous to deal with by only 1 or 2 people?
Typo - This is an animal I know NO knowledge of.

Yes they are edible and people do eat them. You can find ads for feral hog hunts online and in sporting magazines.

Of course. There is no reason not to.

They are a good species to start hunting with if they are present in your area. The laws are very lax due to the fact that they are detrimental to the land.
A hunting license is generally all you need. No bag limit, no caliber restriction, no mag restriction, you can bait them, hunt with dogs and in a lot of places hunt at night with lights and IR scopes.
They are even hunted from helicopters.

Feral hog is a general term for any breed of hog that has been returned, for whatever reasons, and reverted to the wild. So yes, feral hogs are edible, however, the Russian and Eurasian are not typical to Texas and present a more aggressive and invasive animal. The meat is very lean and stronger taste.
I don`t have any desire to hunt any wild hog for food because of the diseases and parasites they are prone to carry. They do need to be eradicated for their own good as well as ours. Their strength is in number and usually when you spot one there are 29 other ones nearby you don`t spot. I have them on my property and have witnessed at least two distinct bloodlines of herds that segregate themselves.
Bean logic: You kill a hog...the hog has parasites in the muscular parts of the body...you cook the hog well done to satisfy yourself that you are consuming meat safe to eat...after all has been said and done after eating that porkchop or ham...did you not eat cooked parasites instead of live ones?
If you think not...then where did the parasites go?

People are shooting lots of them the problem is there are millions of them. When we hunted them we would set up a live cage trap to catch a group of them. Then we would feed them plain ol' hog feed with some grain and apples if we had them In about 2 weeks we would slaughter them and they tasted great!
As far as just hunting and shooting them the things to do is shoot the younger ones. Because an old boar has a strong flavor many dont like. You can live trap the big boar and feed him a few weeks and he will taste some better. But we went after the younger ones and they cooked up fine. Hog meat needs to cool down fast so we brought lots of ice if it was warm outside.
All that aside people need to start shooting them on sight. They are destroying habitat, farms, and private property.
My fav hog to shoot and eat was the Arkansas razorback it has huge tusks that can rip you a knew one! Used to hunt them with dogs in the swamps. They were fast and smart. Note the difference from the feral hog;

The way we hunted them was in groups of 3 to 5 people and we used a bait station to get them out of the thick canebrakes where its too dangerous cause you cant see them before they are on you. Its like a jungle in there so we get em to move out in the open then shoot them with rifles. The picture below reminds me of how my uncles hunted the razorback (russian boar) back in 1960 in Arkansas.

All wild animals can be dangerous and unpredictable to varying degrees.
They had a character kill one for food on The Walking Dead, so they are probably edible. Though if you're not living through an apocalypse or have gotten lost in the woods and desperate for food, I'd recommend you don't.

They are hunted and eaten, but their numbers are still growing as they are very resilient, and eat pretty much anything. They are also hard and dangerous to hunt.

Yes. You'll want to overcook them.
