Does amoxicillin affect Sprintec? If so, for how long?
I'm halfway through a 10-day course of amoxicillin for an ear infection and have been using condoms as a backup. How long do I need to continue doing this?
I did ask my pharmacist this question, but he didn't seem sure and just said that using backup would be a good idea. Trying to get a straight answer because according to my husband, condoms suck, and we have a seven-month-old who still isn't sleeping through the night and are pretty much terrified of ending up pregnant again, lol.

If you want a straight answer, then ask your doctor - NOT your pharmacist. Amoxicillin that is prescribed to be taken at home for an ear infection is a very mild antibiotic, and it doesn't usually affect Sprintec (birth control pills).

Antibiotics taken by mouth can potentially decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills (estrogen-containing oral contraceptives). This occurs because, in addition to killing the bacteria responsible for causing the current illness or infection, oral antibiotics also kill the normal bacteria that live in the stomach that are responsible for activating the birth control pill.
Antibiotics that have been shown to interact with birth control pills include rifampin (Rifadin®), and to a lesser extent, penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim®), tetracycline, minocycline, metronidazole (Flagyl®) and nitrofurantoin (Macrobid® or Macrodantin®).

If you are asking about how long to take antiobitics, 5 more days. Take the medicine for the entire period prescribed by your doctor. Stopping antibiotics is one reason (just one mark you) why we are having a problem with the rise of antibiotic resistant germs.
After reading your question again, I realize you may be asking how long you need to use condoms. Tongue in cheek answer, how lucky do you feel? I would give say 3 days after your finish the antibiotics for them to be essentially out of your system and then another 5 days for your birth control pills to become effective, just like if you were starting them mid cycle.

Then I would be adding more days, not trying to stop a couple of days earlier :-)

Assuming you are concerned that your hubby's sper might infect you with an ear infection. I have never known sperm to transmit any illness except STDs. I have also never known ear infections to be contagious in any way. Let the matress dance begin.

Yes continue to use condom until you have your next period
Amoxillin is a very good antibiotic but its strong
If your husband is complaining about condom
ask him how he would like to be a father again in 9 months from now

Why on earth weren't you smart enough to ask the doc that gave you the antibiotics??
