Death is pain. After death, no pain is felt, but during and up to the end, it's very painful. You hear stories about people who died in their sleep being some kind of blessing, but it is only a blessing to the survivors.
Being vaporized is about the only painless way to die...maybe.
Pain exist ONLY to keep you from dying.
