Humans personified nature as deities: the sun, death, hurricanes, winter.

Mainly, they believed in deities that controlled the elements of nature, such as wind, water, rain, crop growth, etc. Those deities later got upgraded to gods, who did the same jobs as the deities before. Later, the gods got reduced due to layoffs, and it was all put onto single overworked god, who had to rely on assistants like angels and devils to carry out all of his tasks. The end.

My ancestors worshiped the Norse gods before Christianity replaced them by decree of the King.
