Cold weather, what equipment do you need for outdoor travel?

How cold, what kind of travel, and is there snow and/or ice, and if so, how much?  My needs for cold weather travel are quite variable depending on the answers to those questions.  I have several different clothing strategies even, depending on the situation.  Cold is half the year here where I live.  There is cold, and there is really freaking cold ow it is painful cold.  My needs are different for each.

If I am just taking a plane trip, I just bring the minimum required for the temperature.  No need for my skis or snowshoes, or a shovel, or whatever.  Totally different if I am out in the woods.
