What could be wrong?

So, I bought a used MacBook Pro with the only issue being that it powers on sometimes according to the seller. I didn’t think it could be that big of a deal considering just issues have fixes and because I got it so cheap, I was willing to toss in some additional money to get it fixed. I have now received the MacBook, today as a matter of fact. Upon powering it on, it didn’t turn on. Okay, I knew that was to be expected as the seller mentioned it in the description. He also mentioned, whenever he got it to power on, he held the shift button. Well, I did that and countless other commands to try and get it to turn on. I notice that the fans work and a light on the front facing me works. The do, however, turn off a few seconds after. I’m not able to take it to a nearby repair shop until tomorrow but was curious to see what the issue might be before taking it in. Perhaps at least an idea, that way I know what I’m looking at in terms of repair and cost. Thanks!

    1) Faulty power button/ motherboard

    2) Poorly configured bios

    3) Loose connection somewhere.

Those are my 3 first thoughts, but I would really need to see it first to give any more precise answer

You don't write as to which model "used MacBook Pro" and which MacOS version it is supposed to run.

You are confusing when you tell "only issue being that it powers on sometimes".

Do we have to assume that sometimes it does not power up?  Or few times out of many trials?  The Shift + Power button is for getting around basic boot problems.

"so cheap" means just a few dollars?  Hundreds?

"Upon powering it on, it didn’t turn on" and "the fans work and a light on the front facing me works" means you see power supply giving various volts to hardware but no image at all on screen?  No light from behind screen?  A faint image seen under a strong light?

Details are important in order to give guesses to help you from a far distance.

No good suggestion except a cheap repair shop.

Source(s): No MacBook here, but I have 13 iMacs of various old age and versions of MacOS, most power up and show on screen and work, but only one has a serious problem--Safe Boot only, not normal. Have not figured that one out yet. Might have to get an original OS disk for it and wipe it clean and start new.

Considering it's an Apple, the cost of repair would tantamount to a new laptop already. That is if Apple actually decides to accept it for repair.

Apple charges fortune for repairs, even just to look at it. Find a local shop that specializes in Macs.
