What are some easy and affordable car upgrades?

Bushings, shocks, struts, tires.

Tires, by far are the best first upgrade.  Next would be exhaust.  Intakes usually require a tune to add any power.

The single most effective upgrade for a car is a better skilled driver!  A member ship in SCCA and Solo II drivers-ed classes would be my recommendation.

It makes no sense to up-grade a cars wheels or even add more horsepower if the driver does not know how to take advantage of the un-grades. Take wheels and tires, most custom wheels add rotating mass and un-sprung weight. The over all result is a poorer handling slower accelerating car.
