Flight Instructor: How can I “Freelance”?

So obviously most flight instructors are employed by a company or business, but what about freelancing?

Is there any way I can freelance as a flight instructor if I Do Not own a plane? Ideas?? Thanks.

I do not have my license yet but I am highly considering it and exploring the possibilities of its use

One of my flight instructors was a Doctor. He doesn't own a plane, but rents a Cessna 404 and a Piper Warrior.

It might be an idea to learn to fly and then buy your own plane before you even think of becoming an instructor. But you will need a lot of flying hours under your belt before you can become an instructor.

Where I learned to fly, all the instructors were freelance.  They didn't work for the school, they were independent.  There are (or were then) a LOT of CFIs  (Certified Flight Instructor).  Pilots saw it as a way to get hours, because if you give someone a 1-hr flying lesson, he gets an hour and you get an hour.

My instructor was an unforgettable character.  She had ferried B-17s during WWII.  She had 35,000 hours of flying time, maybe 5x as much as your average airline pilot.  She was in her 70s and it was a 'retirement' job for her.

Wander down to your local Flying Club or FBO and ask them where they get their CFIs.
