If you are running Windows 10, you do not need either program.  The version of Defenders included in Win 10 is better then either of those programs.  And because it is integrated into Windows it does not have the conflicts and the solwness that other virus scanners can cause.

Both TOTALAV, Avast and AVG are all good scanners.  But like any of the scanners on the market, none of them is perfect.  They use different ways to detect "viruses" and have different list of what they consider to be a "malware" (an unwanted program.)  So they produce different results.  What one may block, another may not.

So you can not say that one is "better" then the other.

noep. most antivirus siftware just copies the virus definitions from Norton or McAfee.

Norton has labs that find the latest viruses before anybody. although i really don't like their interface, so i just use AVG, which is free.

    Depends on your Operating System.

If your using Windows 8 or Windows 7 just use the Free version of what ever you like.

IF your using an Apple Ios  then what ever works.

If your using an Linux OS.   Anti virus Not required.

If you using Windows 10 - Third party anti virus NOT REQUIRED.   Windows 10 has it's own built in Anti Virus called Windows Security.    Some people may disagree with this but I have been doing this for 30+ years.   I have never had a Virus on Windows 10.

They are all about as good as each other, though the safest way to not get viruses is to educate yourself not to click on suspect links!
