Does a wifi repeater have its own Wi-Fi router or do you connect to the reciever through a USB port?

Receiver gets signal NOT from your home router.Usual router distance -about 100ft.To pair repeater with routeryou need to have handy computer and router.

Wi-Fi is designed / intended to have a useful range of 100 feet from the "radio" in ideal conditions.   There is no way that a Wi-Fi routers signal can be seen from 2 miles (10,500 feet) away.

Ideal conditions means zero physical obstructions and zero electoral-mechanical interference.  No trees, no walls of any kind, no electric motors, no TV screens, no cell phones etc....

Find and read IEEE specification 802.11, that defines the criteria which Wi-Fi operates.

Extenders are trans-ceivers. They receive the weak WiFi signal from the router, boost it, and then transmit it much stronger.

But I doubt there is any router WiFi that can reach 2 miles out. I've had some top of the line routers (e.g., Linksys) and none reached more than a few rooms within my house.

If you do get an extender to receive your router; you'll find the extender listed in your device (e.g., laptop) under WiFi Connections. And you connect with the extender just like you would with the router itself.

That is you have to log in with a pass word that you set up when you initially sync the extender to your router. Syncing is done nowadays using the two WPS buttons, one on the extender the other on the router. So you need to know where each button is located on each unit.

Push the two buttons at about the same time and the extender will look for the router and the router will look for the extender. When they "shake hands" the two will act as one. So when you log into the extender you are, by extension, logging into the router.

Depends on brand and model.  On some you need a wire connection to a device like a computer.  Some are true "repeater" types to bridge or extend the range of the home router.  Then a wireless link will work, but it might be slower.

That is all that can be guessed from your information.  I am not familiar with any that have that 2 mi. range unless they are high powered line of sight units.

how the hell do you get a wifi signal at over 2 miles when the strongest can only reach like 120ft away?????
